​I recently helped groups work on strategic planning and I tailor my approach to the needs of the group.
I developed a self-assessment tool to help nonprofit board chairs and executive directors refine and sharpen their functioning and identify gaps, with guidance to help achieve excellence. Here is a pdf with an outline of topics covered, and a pdf with several sample pages from the current draft.

My career has taken me back and forth between law practice and executive leadership, always approaching new challenges with energy and creativity. I have served on numerous boards and committees, provided leadership for programs in Haiti (speaking Creole) and Bolivia (speaking Spanish), served as president of a small liberal arts college in Kansas, served as executive director of a nonprofit based in Colorado working with partners in Latin America, and practiced law in leading law firms in Denver. I welcome the opportunity to apply my unique experience and skills to your opportunity or challenge.
My approach
Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines a “solution” as both “an action or process of solving a problem” and “an answer to a problem.” Just as in mathematics, where the solution to a problem involves showing your work, the solution to a problem is usually stronger where an effective process supports it. Bartel Solutions LLC exists to help people develop processes that lead to answers in a wide range of individual and organizational scenarios.
I formed Bartel Solutions LLC to bring this approach to provide tools and to help solve problems and move organizations forward. Building on a broad range of skills and experiences, there is no limit to the types of situations that Bartel Solutions LLC can help address. Based on a practical approach to your unique situation rather than an array of PhD degrees, I am excited to offer a variety of services through this platform.

Board Decision-Making: Best Practices for a Level Playing Field. In it I recommend creating two documents to guide the board:

Board Calendar of Agenda Items (a grid of general topics to cover in each meeting throughout the year); and
-
Board Rules of Order (articulating the board’s agreed-upon procedures for making decisions, including things like consent agendas which are rarely understood and implemented properly).
